PAIR OUT PEN

This system is placed in the gateway between the calving field and the pair-out or nursery field to catch a cow and calf separately. This allows for safe tagging and handling of calves. The cow and calf can also be put back together while still locked up which promotes 'mothering up' before they are let through the back gate together into the pair-out/nursery field.

KEYKEY BENEFITS

  • Save time.

  • Less stress on cow and calf.

  • "When calving out large herds of cattle by myself, I realized that by tagging calves in the morning, and then pairing out all afternoon, that I was left with little time to finish daily chores. And, even if there were no problem calvers, I could actually get behind with tagging that day. Not to mention often being run at or sometimes over in the open field by protective cows during the process.

I built a pair out pen in between the calving pen and the pair-out field, and once I got behind a pair, they would automatically start heading toward their next field/pair out pen. This would allow me to follow behind the pair with ease at a relaxed walk, and to shut both gates.

Splitting the cow and calf with the pair-out pen made the whole process so much easier and less stressful-especially for the cow. She could still see and smell her calf through the mesh panel, but the system allowed me to process her calf safely. This new system cut my time in half, and was so much less stressful on the livestock as well as safer for myself." -Malcolm
